Dropshipping Profit Formula: How to Calculate Real Net Profit

Many beginners believe dropshipping is simple: sell high, buy low. In reality, true profitability depends on understanding the full dropshipping profit formula.

The Basic Dropshipping Profit Formula

Net Profit = Selling Price − Product Cost − Shipping − Transaction Fees − Advertising Cost

Profit Margin (%) = (Net Profit ÷ Selling Price) × 100

Cost Breakdown Explained

1. Product Cost

The amount you pay your supplier for the product.

2. Shipping Cost

Either paid to the supplier separately or absorbed into the product cost.

3. Transaction Fees

Usually 2%–3% charged by payment processors such as Stripe or PayPal.

4. Advertising Cost (CPA)

Your cost per acquisition from platforms like Meta Ads, TikTok Ads, or Google Ads. For most dropshipping stores, this is the largest expense.

Example Scenario

Selling price: $49
Product cost: $18
Shipping: $6
Transaction fee (3%): $1.47
Ad cost per sale: $20

Net Profit = 49 - 18 - 6 - 1.47 - 20 = $3.53

Margin = 3.53 ÷ 49 = 7.2%

This example shows why many dropshipping stores struggle — advertising costs often consume most of the margin.
